What the hell is this?

I Can't Stand [Meeting] You is a collection of all the ridiculous things I've written to and about drummer and composer Stewart Copeland.

I actually did meet him for about five crazy seconds in 2007, again for a few exciting moments in August 2009, and my most recent (and most thrilling!) encounter took place in October 2009, where I proved myself capable of being, yet again, a total dork in the man's presence.

I can't believe what I get up to. And neither should you.

Dear Stewart,

No one would be surprised to learn that I listened exclusively to the Police on my way to and from the theater tonight, but it might actually surprise you to know that it's been a very long time since I've had an all Police commute.

Giving myself a little respite, I guess, and listening to other things. I mean, the songs aren't going anywhere, are they.

Tonight on the 405 south, on my way home, right about Rosecrans, "Does Everyone Stare" came on. For the most part, Sting's vocal range is either too high or too low for me to really feel comfortable singing along with him, but the beginning of that song is sung, I've always thought, by you, and so as I sang along tonight, as I always do, possibly an octave higher than you but not sounding too bad, I hope, I got a little gleam in my eye, a serious thrill, hearing our two voices together like that.

It's fun to hear you, and to layer over you, and to drive 80 miles an hour down a mostly free moving freeway singing along with a song that's what, 30 years old, that still gives me total enjoyment and makes me think about the man who wrote it and what that was like, in 1979 (wow!) writing that music and playing it and living it, and all the roads and freeways and songs you've written since. And what you, and what I might do in the next thirty years. And my son.

Love you,
Irene

Just think of your little man singing along with you in the future. =)

I spent my entire third pregnancy listening to Zenyatta Mondatta NON STOP. I'm not sure if I would recommend it as that kid has real freaking issues.
Perhaps Ghost in the Machine is a better choice?
p.s. we picked up tickets to see my lilliputian friend Andy Summers talk about photography at National Geographic in December. I hope he's in a good mood.

Hey, say hello to Andy for me! That's so cool! He'll have no idea who you're talking about but I DID see him at UCLA in the summer of 1990, so we have at least THAT connection. And of course Dodger Stadium and the Hollywood Bowl, more recently. I'm the woman who requested they do "Next To You," "One more time - in tune, please!" Hmmm. On second thought...

Ghost in the Machine! No way, I'm already worried about PPD. It's all Outlandos from here on out.

Hey, Duf! I'll be there for Andy's talk, too! Bringing my Mom along. =)
